Children and young people have the right to be safe and happy whilst participating in activities organised by OCDA. OCDA therefore takes all reasonable precautions to safeguard the welfare of the young people who work and attend lessons with us. This child protection policy has been drawn up for the benefit of children and young people under the age of 18, or adults who may be considered vulnerable.  This policy applies to all staff, including teachers, chaperones, voluntary class assistants and guest performers or anyone working on behalf of OCDA. In accordance with the provisions of The Children Act 1989, the “welfare of children is paramount”.  This means that some of the usual considerations of confidentiality may be exceeded by the need to protect children, young people and vulnerable adults. The nature of teaching dance means that teachers will on occasion need to physically adjust and guide bodies using ‘hands on’ correction. All teachers are fully qualified with accreditation from appropriate bodies. OCDA and its staff, are committed to ensuring safe environments for children and young people and believe that it is always unacceptable for a child or young person to experience abuse of any kind. We recognise our responsibility to safeguard the welfare of all children and young people, by a commitment to recommend best practice which protects them. We recognise that:
  • the welfare of the child/young person is paramount
  • all children, regardless of age, disability, gender, racial heritage, religious belief, sexual orientation or identity, have the right to equal protection from all types of harm or abuse
  • working in partnership with children, young people, their parents, carers and other agencies is essential in promoting young people’s welfare

The purpose of the policy:

  • to provide protection for the children and young people who participate in our lessons, show productions, exams or any other activities
  • to provide staff and volunteers with the overarching principles that guide our approach to child protection and guidance on procedures they should adopt in the event that they suspect a child or young person may be experiencing, or be at risk of harm

We will seek to safeguard children and young people by:

  • valuing them, listening to and respecting them
  • adopting child protection guidelines through procedures and safe working practice for staff and volunteers
  • recruiting staff and volunteers safely, ensuring all necessary checks are made
  • sharing information about child protection and safe working practice with children, parents, staff and volunteers
  • sharing information about concerns with agencies who need to know, and involving parents and children appropriately
  • providing effective management for staff and volunteers through supervision, support and training

The Principal, Clare O’Connor, is the Designated Safeguarding Lead (DSL).

The Principal will review this policy annually, or sooner in light of any changes in legislation or guidance.

All the teachers are DBS (Disclosure and Barring Service) checked and fully insured. Teachers are also First Aid trained and regularly attend Child Protection and Safeguarding Training.

If, following discussion about Child protection concerns or a young person’s safety and wellbeing with the Designated Safeguarding Lead (i.e., the Principal) a decision is made to report such concerns staff can contact the Surrey County Council (SCC) Children’s Services ‘Single Point of Access’ between 9am to 5pm on Monday to Friday.

  • Phone:0300 470 9100 (Out of hours phone: 01483 517898 to speak to the Surrey County Council emergency duty team).
  • Email: cspa@surreycc.gov.uk
